Kyoto University, together with Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and the University of Fukui, will
promote efforts at the new research reactor to be constructed at the site of the prototype fast breeder
reactor “Monju” in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture. In close collaboration with JAEA and the University
of Fukui, the Institute for Integrated Radiation and Nuclear Science, Kyoto University (KURNS), will
lead the planning and implementation of advanced experimental equipment and the establishment of
an efficient operation system, drawing on the knowledge and experience gained through the
operation of KUR and KUCA, with the aim of making the new research reactor attractive to the
academic community, industry, and local society.

This laboratory is an industry-academia collaborative laboratory established based on a joint
research agreement with JAEA, which is the main executing agency of the New Research Reactor
from the detailed design phase onward. It supports the activities of the New Research Reactor
Development and Utilization Center of KURNS, which plays a central role in proactive engagement in
the construction of the New Research Reactor by examining the neutron instruments to be installed
in the New Research Reactor and the management system for promoting its utilization.

This laboratory and the New Research Reactor Development and Utilization Center are actively
studying the following issues in the new research reactor.

  • Neutron irradiation instruments
  • Neutron irradiation instruments
  • Hot laboratories and associated experimental facility.
  • Digital Transformation (DX)
  • Management system of the new research reactor.
  • Human resource development and industrial application of the new research reactor.
